Religious Education

Our RE website contains lots of useful information about our subject as well and can be visited by Clicking Here

Why should students study your subject?

• RE provokes challenging questions about the ultimate meaning and purpose of life, beliefs about God, the self, the nature of reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human.

• RE offers opportunities for personal reflection and spiritual development. It will encourage you to explore your own beliefs (whether they are religious or not) in light of what you learn. You will also examine issues of religious beliefs and faith, and consider your own responses to the questions raised.

• RE encourages respect for all, including those with differing faiths and beliefs, as you develop understanding and appreciation of our diverse society and world. RE helps to challenge prejudice, discrimination and racism.

What skills does your subject teach?

Students gain many skills in Re including: Identifying questions -This covers identifying questions and defining enquiries, using a range of methods, media and sources. It includes the skill of investigation. Empathy and reflection -This involves using empathy, critical thought and reflection to consider their learning and how they feel about it. Evaluation - This involves evaluating their learning and considering how it might apply to their own lives.

Why is your subject useful for the world of work, or future employment? What kind of jobs could someone do using your subject? How can students take your subject further, eg at college, university, the world of work etc

Knowledge of other cultures and world religious beliefs can be useful in many jobs where you are working with the public or communities. These include Uniformed public services such as Army, police etc; counselling and social services; marketing, sales and advertising; catering and hospitality, leisure; sport and tourism; retail sales and customer services; education and training; medicine and nursing; and service sector roles.

What is your overall curriculum intent?

It is our intent for the Religious Education element of our school curriculum to engage, inspire, challenge and encourage pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to answer challenging questions. Religious Education contributes significantly to the character of the school and enables pupils to ask deep and often searching questions about their own faiths and beliefs, and the beliefs, faiths and opinions of others regarding pertinent contemporary moral issues. The teaching of RE makes links between the beliefs, practices and value systems of a range of faiths and world-views studied. The RE curriculum will help to develop responsibility and respect for all aspects of diversity, whether it be social, cultural and religious, and prepare pupils well for life in modern Britain.
